Hurricane Beryl has wreaked havoc in the US state of Texas. Powerful hurricane Beryl has caused flooding. At least four people have died due to the storm. How terrible the storm is can be gauged from the fact that about 30 lakh homes and commercial establishments have lost power. The National Hurricane Center said on Monday evening that Beryl made landfall near Matagorda as a category-one storm, after which schools, commercial establishments, offices and financial institutions were closed.
The National Hurricane Center said that there are chances of floods, rain and strong thunderstorms in parts of eastern Texas, western Louisiana and Arkansas. Meanwhile, two people died due to trees falling on houses and a Houston Police Department employee lost his life due to being trapped in flood water. Another person is reported to have died in a fire incident.
At present, employees have started assessing the damage. Officials urged local residents to stay at home. Mayor John Whitmire said in a press conference, “Don’t assume that the danger is over just because you see clear skies.” He said, “The conditions are still dangerous. It is not yet known how much damage has been caused.”
Last week, Hurricane Beryl caused heavy destruction in Jamaica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where at least 12 people died. Currently, the storm is moving northeast at a speed of 12 mph, about 70 miles southwest of Houston. The storm is expected to move towards the Lower Mississippi Valley and then the Ohio Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday.
