Innovation: The University of California has developed technology that can translate the thoughts of paralyzed patients into words

Recently, scientists from the University of California have developed a special system. With the help of which the thoughts of the paralyzed person can be changed into his voice. Scientists have implanted sensors in the brain of a 45-year-old paraplegic, Casey Harrell, who cannot speak. With this technique, the paralyzed Harrell began to communicate his thoughts within minutes.

This new technology works when the paralyzed person tries to speak. Meanwhile, this technique converts his thoughts into text. University neurosurgeon David Bradman said the BCI technique has helped a paralyzed person communicate with friends and family. He further said that our invention represents the best speech neuroprosthesis to date. The machine read 99.6% of the words correctly. This is a very good result. Such a system would prove helpful for people who cannot speak in a paralyzed person.

A BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) system picks up the relevant brain signals when a paralyzed person tries to speak. It then converts the brain’s signals into words that appear on the screen. The computer then reads it in the same person’s real voice. Dr. Bradman experimentally implanted a BCI device in a patient’s brain in July 2023.
