After causing havoc all over the world, now the side effects of Corona are coming to light. Recently there was a lot of discussion about the side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine. Now the World Health Organization i.e. WHO has expressed danger regarding overdose of antibiotics given during Corona. A new research by WHO has revealed that the antibiotics given in Covid treatment have led to the rapid spread of superbug i.e. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).
AMR is an adverse reaction that occurs when too many antibiotics enter the body. Due to this, after some time the effect of antibiotics on the body starts reducing. Health experts say that giving antibiotics unnecessarily causes harm instead of benefit.
Antibiotics given without reason in Covid
This research was done by WHO on about four and a half lakh people admitted due to Covid in about 65 countries between 2020 and 2023. According to the World Health Organization, only 8 percent of the people who were admitted to hospitals due to Corona had bacterial infection.
Such people needed antibiotics. Whereas out of caution, antibiotics were given to 75 percent of the patients. Most antibiotics were given to those patients who had severe Covid symptoms. However, people with moderate and mild symptoms were also given antibiotics.
According to the World Health Organization, the biggest threat will arise in the coming years due to superbugs, i.e. when antibiotics will stop working on the body. According to the statistics, in 2019, about 12.7 lakh people lost their lives due to superbugs and if this trend continues, by 2050, 1 crore people may lose their lives every year.
